David is a uro-gynaecologist and immediate Past President of the RCOG. He has a strong track record of clinical leadership with a focus on clinical quality and recently co-chaired the UK Models of Care Panel for the National Maternity Review.
As RCOG Vice President (Clinical Quality) he published High Quality Women’s Health – a proposal for developing a life-course approach to women’s healthcare combined with advocating networks for care. He championed the production of the first RCOG Maternity Clinical Indicators Report for England. His main interests lie in all aspects of education, training, clinical quality and safety and the implementation of national guidance. He has a strong track record in workforce planning and authored the RCOG report on the Future Workforce in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for England and Wales. As President he was instrumental in delivering Better Births for maternity Services in England. He was an invited member of two national reviews of benign urogynaecological care influencing practice and new guidance.
David was Medical Director of the Liverpool Women’s Hospital Trust from 1993 to 2010, following his appointment as a Consultant to central Liverpool in 1990. During that time he successfully steered the Trust through the reconfiguration of obstetrics and gynaecology services in Liverpool with the opening of the Liverpool Women’s Hospital in 1995.
He has been an expert witness for the GMC and was the obstetrics and gynaecology advisor for NCAT involved in reconfiguration of South Coast, NW London and NE England services of women’s health.
